Blaise Pascal spent most of his time with numbers and physics problems. In Pensees, he threw a different kind of idea against the wall that has managed to stick around. It’s called Pascal’s Wager now.
Basically, Pascal said that you can choose to believe in God or to not believe in God. He kind of played it safe and said that if you just go ahead and choose to believe in God you’re covered. No God, no problem – you just wasted your time on earth, but at least it’s not eternal damnation.
